A few days ago Hello Games broke their silence to announce that a surprise new update would be coming for No Man’s Sky this week, and that update is now available on both PC and PlayStation.  Known as the “Foundation Update,” Hello Games says this will be the first in a series of updates designed to improve the heavily criticized game based on the feedback they received since the game’s launch in August.   The 1.3 GB update adds a variety of new features to the game including game modes, base building, the ability to purchase freighters, farming, camps, auto-harvesters, new resources, various UI and graphics enhancements, and much more.

Aimed at improving replayability for all player types, the Foundation Update adds two new game modes.  In addition to the standard exploration experience (now calleded “Normal mode”), the game now has Creative mode aimed at allowing you to build and explore without limits, and Survival mode that presents a much more challenging survival experience.

The update adds the ability to build custom bases, and recruit AI to help with research.  With the addition ofthe new farming system (and new plants), bases will likely prove to be a valuable resource for you to grow and store resources for use throughout your journey.  You can also purchase and use large interstellar freighters for resource farming and storage allowing you to move resources between galaxies with ease.

In addition to building permanent bases, players can also establish camps in the field by building save points, waypoints, communications terminals, and signal scanners.  The game also adds automated harvesters to mine mineral deposits while you are away.

There are also other enhancements in this update including UI updates to help you more easily identify resources and threats, a new quick access menu for accessing and charging your equipment, and various graphic improvements including motion blur and Temporal Anti Aliasing (TAA).  The patch also fixes a large number of issues that have been reported since the last update.

You can read all the details on the game’s website, or in the patch notes below.
