Chicago Implements “Cloud Tax”

According to The Verge, Chicago’s Department of Finance new Cloud Tax goes into effect today and it affects gamers, and everyone who purchases anything on the internet in the Chicago city limits. This controversial law adds a 9% “Cloud Tax” to things purchased on the internet. This means “electronically delivered amusements” such as Spotify, Netflix, Hulu, etc. are all those kinds of services as well as “nonpossessory computer leases.”

This could possibly mean that the additional 9% tax could be applied to Steam, G2A, GoG, and Office 365. Although this remains to be seen depending on how loose the wording in the law is. This is Chicago’s way of reclaiming tax dollars that local businesses have lost due to the amount of online services customers are using.
