What Is Sega’s Philosophy?

Written by Ryan Shoptaw Published April 30, 2011
COMMENTS

Sega’s Director of Internal Game Development Yokio Sugino, sat down with Famitsu Magazine and discussed many things about Sega. One of the topics was Sega’s philosophy. Sugino had this to say…

“Sega’s philosophy has always been that creativity is our lifeblood, and we try to reflect that not just in what we make, but in all aspects of our work. Staying consistent with this spirit is what’s allowed us to approach the world of entertainment in such a broad scope. With the arcade business at the time, we never really divided our market between Japan and overseas. Our approach was that we were selling to the world — there was never any discussion over adjusting our games for this or that region. With arcade games, you’re already losing the customer if he has to read the instruction card; you have to give him more enjoyment than he’s expecting for the money he pays. If we want that to happen, we can’t afford to have a language barrier, we can’t afford to make the controls difficult to understand.”

“Focusing strictly on games, the fighting game boom kicked off by Capcom was a major one. It created a real-life community; it reinforced the fun of going someplace where people share your likes and your hobbies. Another one is online. Sega’s been involved with mobile providers ever since Virtua Fighter 4, and more recently there’s been Border Break, a network game where up to 20 players can compete at once. Games like that let you go to the arcade and enjoy what makes network gaming fun without a lot of trouble, and I think that’s one big advantage that arcades still have.”

Ubisoft Marketing Chief Talks Driver: San Francisco

Written by Ryan Shoptaw Published April 30, 2011
COMMENTS

UK Marketing Director of Ubisoft Murray Pannel recently sat down with GoNintendo and discussed the upcoming game Driver: San Francisco. Pannel said that the company wants Driver to be back on top.

“Driver as a brand has been massive in the past, and there is no reason to suggest that it couldn’t be just as great in the future. Despite the fact there’s not been a Driver game for over five years, it is still in the top five Ubisoft brands in terms of awareness.”

“Of course Driver and Assassin’s Creed are two very different types of game, but they both have mainstream appeal and the ability to capture the imagination of a wide spectrum of core and casual gamers. The ambition for all our studios is to make games that have the scope, depth, lasting appeal, enjoyment factor and sales potential of games like Assassin’s Creed.”

“From an investment point of view we are treating both franchises like true blockbuster titles, so the ambition is there. We have a real opportunity to take this mainstream due to the broad appeal of the franchise. Driver is most definitely back and the marketing campaign will make sure it stays firmly on the map for this year.”

Driver: San Francisco comes out on August 30.

EA Executive Producer Jason DeLong had this to say…

“This is the year that Need for Speed goes to the next level. We think that Need for Speed The Run is going to surprise people with its intense, thrilling story and big action feel. But the game would be nothing without hot cars and crazy-fast chases. So that is what we’re delivering — explosive racing that will have players flirting with disaster at 200-miles an hour.”

No official release date has been announced yet. The game will be available for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and Nintendo 3DS.

Gearbox Denies Borderlands 2

Written by Ryan Shoptaw Published April 25, 2011
COMMENTS

After rumors spreading around the internet by James Mosingois, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford commented on those rumors.

“I honestly have no idea who James Mosingois is. If I had to guess… I know last year – around September or October of last year when we were wrapping up the Calp Trap’s New Robot Revolution DLC – we hired some contractors to help us blue sky brainstorm some things that were HUD related (among other things) when we were starting to think about what to do next with the Borderlands franchise.”

As for the possibility of Borderlands 2, he simply said…

“I can tell you that myself and everyone at Gearbox LOVES Borderlands and we have been absolutely thrilled at the reception it’s gotten from our customers and the fact that it’s sold over four million units now.

So you can see that we supported the game like mad with lots of great DLC and you can imagine that we’re going to want to do a lot of things with Borderlands in the future. But we’ve only announced what we’ve announced. If we haven’t announced it, it doesn’t exist.

Plans and efforts toward the future always exist with a forward looking studio like Gearbox, of course, but brainstorming and blue sky research and development should never be allowed to be construed into a customer promise.”

Rumors of Borderlands 2 started awhile back when a copy of Mosingois’s resume was released online and had “user interface concepts for Borderlands 2″ on it.

MonkeyPaw Games Discusses BurgerTime HD

Written by Ryan Shoptaw Published April 23, 2011
COMMENTS

President of MonkeyPaw Games, John Griener, recently sat down with Silconera and discussed their remake of the classic game BurgerTime with Burgertime HD. Below is what Griener had to say…

“BurgerTime is the classic arcade example of why we have retro. It’s the blues of gaming. The roots. We need to preserve our classics and we want to relive our past, but let’s not do it with 80′s tech. We needed to remake the entire concept while keeping the core mechanics.”

“So the fun stays but the world gets painted on an entirely new canvas. The cylindrical rotating levels allowed us to expand the playing field without losing the burger-making mechanics. The ability to see through the cylinder and spot what others are doing on the other side opened the doors for a more dynamic multiplayer experience. Behind Peter Pepper you can see other opponents and gameplay objects.”

“These could be other chefs playing against you, other ingredients and other enemies. It’s not a meaningless upgrade to 3D graphics because it’s actually important to keep track of what’s on the other side of the rotating world. This is a fairly unique way of translating an old 2D game and we feel it’s an evolution of the core design.”
